About
An Unexpected Enterprise
Mystic Yarn Works is a small independent dye studio in Houston, Texas that specializes in long gradients dyed primarily on Tencel™, bamboo, and cotton. It was founded sort of unintentionally in April 2020 when I decided to try doing my own gradient yarn using some materials furnished to me by my dear sweet grandmother because she thought I could do my own yarn just fine.
Well, so it happened that I made my first gradient yarn in ten segments from bright green to medium blue, since those were the colors my grandma chose. It turned out pretty cool! I threw it up in the "For Sale" album on my Facebook page, imagining it would sit there and rot like everything else I put up there for sale. Much to my own amazement, someone asked to buy it almost immediately. |
So, I made another one and someone bought that, then I made another one and someone bought that. Next thing I knew I was up to my eyeballs in yarn and dye stuff and I had a business on my hands. Since then, Mystic Yarn Works has expanded to include more fiber bases, making custom blends, and making handspun yarn. One of these days I may even venture into dyeing wool and silk, but as of the moment cellulose-based fibers are my primary bag.
